If I have time at the weekend or on holiday (in Scotland, on the featured photo) I make mine in a saucepan, during the week I tend to use the fine cut variety that you can microwave in 2 mins. Either way I make mine with almond milk, and top with whatever fruit and nuts I have; typically banana, cinnamon, flaked almonds and blueberries.

  1. Dear Sheila, have you tried cooking dates in the porridge? I use just dates and water, no milk at all. Dates are a healthy and delicious natural sweetener and you don’t need many. Also, here is my recipe for no added sugar Date Slice; it is medicine food!

    Date Slice

    4oz dried dates, chopped
    3oz organic porridge oats
3oz organic flour of your choice (50/50 white and wholemeal?)
    3oz butter or nutter

Put the chopped dates in a small pan and nearly cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer until your achieve a paste (add extra water as needed). Set aside to cool.
Chop the butter into the dry ingredients and rub in to create ‘breadcrumbs’.
Scatter half over the bottom of a lined 7 or 8” square tin. Smooth over the date paste and top with the remaining crumbs.
Bake in the centre of a medium oven for 12 – 15 mins or until golden.
    Cut into 9 squares.
I couldn’t live without it! I hope you like it and warmest wishes to you – you are amazing!
