The blackberry bushes and bullace plums are ripe and ready to be foraged. It feels so good to walk the hedgerows to gather fruits to turn into healthy homemade jam, for the family to enjoy. Just as they were when I was a child, the plumpest juiciest blackberries are at the top of the hedgerows..

This easy to make healthy jam has only four ingredients and the chia seeds deliver many nutritional benefits including omega-3, fibre, protein, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and antioxidants. It contains no sugar and only a small amount of honey or nectar.


1 lb. of frozen blackberries

3 tbs of chia seeds

2 tsp of either honey or maple syrup or agave nectar or brown rice syrup or coconut nectar

1 tsp of vanilla

1 tsp of lemon juice


Sterilise the jars, if your using Kilner jars refer to their guidance on the water bath method.

Heat the frozen blackberries in a pan, until they start to break down.

Use a potato masher to gently mash the fruit.

Reduce the heat and simmer for about 8 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid it sticking.

Add the chai seeds and honey, simmer for a further five minutes. Keep stirring as it begins to thicken.

At the last moment, off the heat add the vanilla.

Place the jam into the sterilised jars. Leave to cool and add a label noting the use by date, in two weeks time.
